A Boatload of New Games From Nitrome:

Hello everyone! It’s been awhile. But we’ve been busy! Today marks FIVE new Nitrome games launching on playbrassmonkey.com as well as updates to 4 others and Double Edged is now FREE – all from our good friends at Nitrome. Want to just SEE them all and skip the post? We understand. CLICK HERE.

(We’ve used Nitrome’s promo video, because it’s awesome)

The Test Subject Series

(4 games in all) represents hours upon hours of gameplay. In Test Subject Blue you begin as a simple goo-creature named “Blue”, who must find his way to a food pill in a series of puzzling lab experiments. In the sequel, Test Subject Green, Blue’s life only gets harder when he is stolen from the lab and forced by a rival scientist to take on even more lethal challenges. The saga culminates in Test Subject Complete, where Blue must put his puzzle solving abilities to the test to escape from the lab altogether!

Tired of Puzzles? Fight!

All of these are tied together nicely by “Test Subject Arena”, a multiplayer version of Test Subject where characters from the main game can slug it out in one of several microscopic arenas.

These games draw in virtually any physics/platformer mechanic you can imagine. Gravity manipulation, switch puzzles, teleporters, bullet ricochet puzzles and good old platforming, just to name a few- and players are rewarded for their progression by a story which unfolds in the background as scientists scurry around and black clad soldiers abduct, conduct new experiments and look in on your progress.

Colour Blind:

Another puzzle platformer that’s a lot more focused on thinking your way through puzzles. In Colour Blind you control a right eye who has to rescue his girlfriend, a left eye. To do this, you must travel through a landscape that begins as black and white and reveals new details (and dangers) as you collect various different colors- causing them to become visible to you and allowing them to affect you- whether it’s a red platform that you can suddenly jump to… or the spikes beneath it which you can now become impaled upon.

Double Edged:

DOUBLE EDGED IS FREE.
What else do you need to know? The most popular Nitrome game on Brass Monkey is now free to anyone. Go it alone or with up to 4 total players and battle through wave after wave of greek warriors and monsters of myths. Choose from a variety of different weapons including swords, daggers, clubs, boulders, chickens and pigs.

Improved!

Those of you who follow our development news know that Brass Monkey launched a new d-pad a little while ago. Nitrome has been hard at work retrofitting their d-pad games to use it. Double Edged is one way to check it out, but now might also be a good time to take a look at Twin Shot 2, Bad Ice Cream 1, and Bad Ice Cream 2- all of which have incredibly slick controls. Prepare to look down at your hands less!

New Release: Drake in Winterland Competition

This week’s new release is an excellent platform/racer from our friends at Lartar Games. Drake is back in Drake’s Winterland Competition! Just in time too, it seems like a lot of the industry has taken a break from releases the week of E3, and you can only watch so many press conferences (although we’ve been watching them all).

This time the star of Drake and The Wizards is back, but his friends aren’t in danger, for once, it’s time for some fun and games! Click here to play it now!

Drake’s Winterland Competition offers numerous race tracks populated with traps, pits, falling objects, enemies and treasure. Drake the dragon must race around the screen evading obstacles and collecting loot and hit the finish line before the screen scrolls past him.

Once the race is over Drake can then spend the coins to upgrade himself in a ton of different ways. He can improve his powers of flight, his speed, his jump height, the power of his fireballs… you name it. Plan your purchases carefully, though, it’ll take just the right skills to get through all of the levels.

And if you’re looking to see more of Drake, or more of Lartar’s excellent games on Brass Monkey, check them out here:

New Release: Straight, No Chaser

Today’s new release is Straight, No Chaser- by the brilliant indie developer Mario von Rickenbach, the creative mind behind another multiplayer favorite Rakete.

Straight, No Chaser, is a two player competitive “tag” game with a clean, minimalist aesthetic and simple arcade mechanics. Easy to learn, hard to master.

The first player who reacts after the countdown gets a trail. Move straight for as long as you can with the trail to score points and fill up your score bar. If the other player catches you they gain control of the tail. When a player has a high enough score the match ends and they win. Simple, right?

There’s a bit more to it than that though. If you’re the player who HAS the tail you slow down if you move in the same direction for too long, making you easier to catch- and if you’re the player chasing the player with the tail moving parallell to them makes you speed up- a lot. So the game is largely about planning out your evasion or pursuit to take advantage of these mechanics.

Give it a shot. This has already become a favorite here at Brass Monkey. And if you like it please let us know, or better yet, let Mario know so that we can get even more of his awesome content. I mean, just take a look at Mirage and Krautscape… wow.

New Release: Tamus and Mitta Adventures

Our newest release today is Tamus and Mitta Adventures, a puzzle/adventure game from our good friends at Lartar Games. Tamus and Mitta is a family friendly adventure, featuring simple gameplay with extra challenges for more experienced gamers.

Players control their choice of Tamus or Mitta, a couple of kids from a mining town who have a serious problem. Monsters have swept in and taken the Sun’s toys away, and now it refuses to shine. Tamus and Mitta need to go into the caves and mines where the monsters have hidden and recover all of the toys or the sun will never shine again!

Tamus and Mitta features an unusual mechanic. Instead of a life total the main character carries a candle which casts a small amount of light into the dark caves Tamus and Mitta explore. Over time the light dwindles and needs to be relit at torches- monsters striking Tamus and Mitta will also cause them to lose some of the light from their candle. The result is that you never quite know what’s next, and you need to be very cautious or wind up trapped far from a torch with your candle running out.

Once you’ve been through each mine and collected all of the toys (and candy, which can be used to purchase things), there’s a bonus level in each one which challenges your memory of the safest paths through the mine that you’ve discovered. The challenges allow you to earn special items which can be used to bargain with the townsfolk to unlock new levels and new items and proceed further in the game.

And if you like this game please let us know, and check out Drake and the Wizards and Drake and the Wizards 2, a couple of additional games by Lartar on the Brass Monkey platform.

New Release: Super Jetroid

This week’s new release is a little gem that’s been around for awhile, but you might not have come across. Jesse Freeman’s Super Jetroid. It’s a simple concept, a great challenge, and a lot of fun.

Players control an astronaut explorer in search of artifacts, wealth and alien life. The astronaut has a series of caves to explore fraught with limited visibility, twisting, turning tunnels, switch/door puzzles and, of course, some of the aliens are less than friendly.

The astronaut has three resources to manage as he explores these caves. You can only handle so many ‘close encounters’ with the aliens before his life drops to 0 and you dies. In addition, your jetpack has limited fuel which must constantly be recharged and, of course, it’s space, so your suit has a limited oxygen capacity. All of this means that you need to get into each cave, grab as much as you can, check out the alien life without getting *too* close and get out before you find yourself gasping for air.

Give it a shot for an enjoyable hour or two of gameplay.

Exclusive Release: Kiwi Katapult Revenge

This week we’re pleased to announce, at long last, the initial alpha release of Kiwi Katapult Revenge. Kiwi Catapult Revenge is a Brass Monkey enabled flying game developed by our sister company Infrared5 and is a Brass Monkey exclusive, not currently available elsewhere. If you’ve been paying attention you might notice that we’ve been talking about it for awhile.

Karl in flight

In Kiwi Katapult Revenge you take on the role of Karl the Kiwi, who loses his family tragically to an attack by the malevolent housecats which are overrunning his fragile New Zealand ecosystem (at least, according to this guy). Karl is rescued from the attack by an ancient, wise Kiwi named Kandalf, who teaches him that Kiwis are the descendants of dragons, and helps him to learn the secrets of his draconic heritage: flight, fire breath and laser vision. Armed with these new powers, Karl sets off to seek revenge, and perhaps even rescue his family, if it’s not too late…

Kiwi Katapult Revenge is a single player game which is ONLY playable using Brass Monkey Controls. It uses tilt to steer and gestures to accelerate, fire lasers and breath fire. It was initially developed with head tracking capabilities using Intel’s perceptual computing hardware. In this early version there are a handful of enemies, about a dozen levels and a few powerups, as well as innocent sheep, who Karl must be careful not to harm on his mission of vengeance.

We’re interested in feedback as this game’s development continues, so please let us know what you think!

New Release: Get your local multiplayer fix in Super Bomb Bugs

Do you like local multiplayer? Did you love the climbing levels in Contra, and watching your friends or siblings who were less adept jumpers than you fall into the unseen abyss below which… strangely seemed to move closer every time one of you jumped? You’ll love this this week’s release from The Podge – Super Bomb Bugs!

In Super Bomb Bugs up to four players control cute little bugs climbing to the top of one of many levels shooting, smashing and blowing up all obstacles in their paths… including themselves and one another. On the way up they’ll face enemies, switch puzzles, spike traps and a whole lot of weird powerups, like the fireball flinging dragon suit, or the adorable but destructive raging bull suit. And on the way they can collect various artifacts which allow them to build crazy devices.

Super Bomb Bugs has three play modes. For the solitary player there’s the ordinary solo game, for peaceful, gentle souls who like to work together to solve problems there’s co-op and then for the rest of us there’s a versus mode, where you smash, bash, drop and ignite your enemies off the screen in a race to the top.

Super Bomb Bugs is FREE so give it a shot, and stay tuned for some of the Podge’s other stuff. And if you missed it when it released don’t forget to check out Firebug 2 (They seem to have a ‘bug’ theme)

New Release: Luminesca, the beautiful, ambient first chapter

Today Brass Monkey is pleased to announce a real treat. Free for the first time on the interwebs, Chapter 1 of Luminesca (alpha).

In Luminesca you take the roll of a small sea creature named Lum. Lum, having recently grown up from his larval state, discovers that his colony is being impacted by a giant, ancient machine that comes to life and begins to consume all of the surrounding water. Lum must navigate the various corners of his world, using only his bioluminescent light to guide him and manipulate his environment and find the heart of the machine that threatens his world.

The first chapter of Luminesca is only a brief prologue, and shows only the tip of what is obviously a rich ecology of both threatening and benign inhabitants, all affected by the events Lum is trying to understand and perhaps change. Lum will encounter adults and larvae of his own species, strange bioluminescent plants and even a few predators in the murky depths as he solves puzzles and speaks to other inhabitants of his world.

The full version of Luminesca is available as a preorder through Team Luminesca’s website, all five chapters will include Brass Monkey controls (and will likely be available on playbrassmonkey.com).

We also ask that if you enjoy the game, you take a moment to vote for it on Steam Greenlight.

And if you’re interested in following and learning about Luminesca as it continues please visit and bookmark their blog, and tell them we sent you.

(No Actual Dinosaurs Were Harmed in the) New Release: BC Bow Contest

This week’s release is “BC Bow Contest” from our good friends at Nitrome and it’s exactly what the name says. Players compete as caveman archers taking aim and firing at targets on rocks, trees, turtles and all kinds of other prehistoric objects trying to rack up the most points. BC Bow Contest uses an intuitive tilt/accelerometer and a simple ‘pull and release’ control scheme to affect both the angle and the power of each shot.

BC Bow Contest has both single and 2-player modes in which players compete in a variety of different archery ranges full of various different kinds of targets and obstacles separated into different ‘cups’ and difficulty levels. In single player mode you’ll take on a variety of different opponents, including our personal favorite “Missing Link”, the confused tool using… or at least tool attempting, Monkey. Beat these opponents and earn high scores to unlock different arrow types which can be used to mess with later opponents, and different playable characters.

Fans of Angry Birds will find the controls fairly similar, but they should be easy for everyone to understand. It’s a great game to practice alone, but once you’ve unlocked some content you should really give it a try against a friend. It costs 10,000 coins to unlock ($0.99). And we’re giving away a hundred free half hour unlocks to the first 100 or so people to redeem the code “bcbow” at playbrassmonkey.com/promos

And we’ll give out bigger codes to the first 5 users to redeem the code “bcbow5k”

And, as always, tell us what you think in the comments below.

New Release! Rogue Soul by Soul Game

This week’s new game is Rogue Soul- a side scrolling action/platform game by Soul Game in which players race through city streets stealing valuables and trying to evade capture and/or injury while trying to get as far as they can with the greatest amount of money possible.

Rogue Soul gives players a lot more options than they average side-scrolling runner. You’ll find numerous different obstacles to climb and navigate around as well as tons of different types of enemies which you can even attack through various means. Power ups such as armor, throwing daggers and parachutes give you a lot of different ways of tackling different situations, and you can even get double jumps by successfully stealing and delivering power-ups to your girlfriend.

Rogue Soul has tons of achievements and power ups including various different unlockable costumes and weapon types as well as trophies (and a trophy room) for accomplishing various feats within the game. Even if you’re dubious about this sort of game we recommend that you give this one a shot- there’s a whole lot of gameplay within a very straightforward premise.
