Brass Monkey is pleased to announce that we’re now hosting a controller-enabled version of Mario Von Rickenbach’s “Rakete” on playbrassmonkey.com.
Rakete is a multiplayer game that plays a little bit like Lunar Lander, with each of up to five players controlling one thruster on a spaceship, and navigating from a starting pad to a landing pad without falling over or crashing into things. It’s a beautifully simple game, a lesson in cooperation and teamwork and has a small chance of causing you and four of your friends to start screaming at each other when some jerkwad screws it up and makes you crash.
Mario, who is also known for his upcoming games Mirage and Krautscape, designed this game as a multiplayer experience but up until now the only readily available web version of it has had keyboard controls, meaning a full 5 person game would have been an exercise in crowding. Now you can play it in something closer to the way it was originally intended. Mario explains on his site:
“Inspired by an airplane simulator experiment, where all passengers (from which none is a pilot) sucessfully land their plane by democratic voting what the pilot should do, I tried to take that principle to make a small and fun cooperative game about controlling a rocket by letting each player activate a single thruster. While the game is playable alone, it is recommended to play it installed with five independent buttons, so the team must work together to reach the goal. It was interesting to see how good a well organized team can control the rocket!”
We really like it because this is a browser based game that focuses on local multiplayer. Most browser game designers have simply given up on trying to create games that encourage people to get together and play locally. This game shows that there’s a good, fun and easy way to do it with Brass Monkey’s tech. (Hey developers- our SDK’s are free!)
So… do yourself a favor, grab between 1 and 4 friends and give it a shot. Seriously- this game rocks.
